Staying Safe When You Meet Someone

Safety isn’t something you’d typically be concerned about when meeting someone in a real-life social situation. But when it comes to meeting friends online, you have to be sure that you’re going to be safe.

Firstly, when you’re meeting someone from online, make sure you meet somewhere that’s neutral.

Meet in a neutral place

Neutral means somewhere that doesn’t favour either person. So, somewhere like Starbucks is a good place to meet someone. Don’t ever meet someone for the first time at their place, or give them your address.

Quite simply, you can’t trust someone you just don’t know. Don’t give anything too personal away, either. For example, don’t give out your mobile number if you’re not sure on the person’s character. Making friends isn't instant and don't forget that tomorrow's friend is currently a stranger.

Meet in the daytime

You should also try and meet your potential friend in the daytime. Or failing that, in the early evening. The thinking behind this is simply that you can be taken off-guard in the dark. Dark alleyways, the like, we’ve all seen Crimewatch. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Let friends know where you’re going

A must for meeting new friends is to let some friends or acquaintances know where you are and make sure you have your mobile phone. Make sure you have your friend’s number on speed dial and quickly to hand should things go pear shaped. The last thing you want is for your friends to start worrying about you, whether you’re having a good time or not.

Buddy system

You could always use the buddy system if you wanted. The buddy system is typically used at universities or colleges in the UK and USA. The buddy system involves you and a friend ‘buddying’ up, and going wherever you’re going together. Quite simple, it’s safety by numbers.

This is quite useful for when going out clubbing or partying. If you stay close, especially when going home, you can avoid any unwanted situations.

You should try and avoid walking home alone in the dark, or taking illegal cabs, especially if you’re a woman.
When you’re first meeting someone, especially at a bar, make sure you keep an eye on the drinks.

There have been horror stories of men and women getting too drunk and then not knowing what has gone on the night before.

Have a good time

Although it may sound like a regimental list of do’s and don’ts for making friends, make sure you have a good time!

As long as you’re sensible about meeting new people for the first time, you’re bound to have fun. Being alert is key to being safe.

Have fun and enjoy yourself!
